Today marks the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The paradigm of “post-war” Europe came to a close in 2022 as the Russian military rolled into Kyiv Oblast and Eastern Ukraine. The return of interstate war on the European continent has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions more. The impact of this war will be measured across generations.
Just as Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine has plunged the world into an ongoing crisis, Zelenskyy’s decision to remain in Kyiv and resist Russia’s aggression has shown the international community that tyrants can be resisted - the rapid collapse of the murderous Assad regime may not have been possible if Kyiv did not push back against Moscow. Yet as the Chinese-Iranian-Russian axis of authoritarianism continues to deepen their cooperation with one-another, Ukraine now faces the prospect of losing American support. Victory and a lasting peace seem distant at this time.
