On April 1st 2025, Senator Corey Booker of New Jersey broke the record for longest speech in the Senate. For 25 hours, Senator Booker spoke of the dangers of the current administration and the imperative to resist the agenda laid out by Trump and oligarchs like Elon Musk. Booker’s marathon speech eclipsed Ted Cruz’s failed attempt to block the passage of the Affordable Care Act and Strom Thurmond’s 24 hour filibuster of the Civil Rights Act.
After passing the 19 hour mark, Senator Booker stated the following:
“My efforts today are inadequate to stop what they’re trying to do. But we the people are powerful.”
There’s a lesson to be learned in these displays of bravery from representatives like Senator Booker. At the moment, it seems like the odds are stacked against us: gerrymandering and voter suppression have given a vocal minority an oversized presence in our legislative branch and an unelected team of bureaucrats are disassembling the very foundations of the federal government under the direction of an oligarch.
But with tonight’s display, it feels like we have reached a turning point. The Democrats are back in the fight.
We should never forget that the vision of America held by Trump and his cronies is fundamentally unpopular and goes against the spirit of what made this country great. For now, we must focus on small victories and channel our energy towards resisting by any means possible, but we should never forget that we are not alone. I applaud Senator Booker for his bravery and strength on the Senate floor today, may he be an example to us all. Through coordination and organization we can push back against Trump and the MAGA agenda and bring about a brighter future.
Thank you, Senator Booker!!!! So much respect for you fighting the fight for our country!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Today, history was made. Tonight, I am very proud for all Americans and for my people. Thank you Senator Booker, for your bold action and strengthening us and our hope and belief in the promise of our US Constitution.
