Five years ago today, I was fired from the National Security Council. Months later, my military career came to an abrupt end—all because I chose to do my duty and testify against Donald Trump.

I put my oath above my personal interests, and while I faced intense backlash, I have no regrets. Despite the harassment, intimidation, and retaliation from Trump and his allies, I stand by my decision to expose his illegal attempt to extort President Zelensky as part of a scheme to steal the 2020 election.

Now, thousands of Americans in the civil service face a similar reckoning. The so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” has become a blunt instrument for purging dedicated public servants. USAID has been gutted, the FBI’s foreign malign influence task force dismantled, and the Treasury Department subverted. Elon Musk and his band of ideological interns have set their sights on the federal workforce, preparing to execute a political purge under the guise of efficiency.
