As a good friend (also an historian) said to me this week: "All the good will we have gained since 1918, pissed away in three weeks by a draft-dodging coward."

It’s hard to view increased defense spending from Europe as much of a consolation prize if that new fighting capacity falls under AfD control.

Secondly, the business of forcing Europe to spend more on defense is one of the things that makes Trump so popular with his voters. Instead of corroborating the value of something he’s doing, we need to be clearer about the imminent collapse of representative government all around the world.

Talk to text isn't working for you without close scrutiny. It doesn't work well for me either, and I think I enunciate pretty clearly...

The suggestions FFOTUS made about Ukraine having to buy US aid with mineral wealth runs along the lines this regime has been following by gutting departments and laws providing scrutiny of interactions between this regime and foreign nationals with regard to deal making and self enrichment. If he were to coerce a deal out of Ukraine (a shameful exercise in greed) it might be legal but it wouldn't be ethical. The Eric Adams case is surely being watched overseas as an indicator of how successfully this administration will open shop for receiving bribes without restraint by our divided and embattled (and possibly unenforced) judiciary, and without the slightest concern for legality or ethicality in any way.

I understand that the US is demanding NATO partners respond to a questionnaire seeking answers which lay out their respective security and armed forces capabilities. I presume the completed responses will be handed to Putin and Xi. Conold Trump and his gang of thugs are clearly in thrall to Putin and Co. America First is a con. Europe must attend to its own security, with both the US and Russia as its enemy alliance facing it. First step expel US forces from Europe. Second step deploy to Ukraine under EU flag. Putin will threaten nuclear weapons in Ukraine. France and UK have their own weapons and should remind Putin that free of malign US control they too wouldn’t stand by meekly if Russia uses tactical nukes in Ukraine. Recall that twice last century despots attacked Europe, and twice they were soundly beaten. Russia is now weakened by three years of war. Time to attack the enemy on its knees. Formerly the role of the US to arrive late, time for Europe to destroy Russia at its most vulnerable.

Joan, Thank you for this important information. It's deeper and more ugly then I could have imagined. Scary times indeed.
