This is so very scary. I won’t pretend to understand the intricacies of these ‘strategies’ but anything that involves turning our backs on the world and isolating ourselves from ‘like minded ‘ countries can never turn out to be a good thing. This policy has never worked. The WWs were evidence of how this type of policy works when we are not a part of the world. Too many lives were lost and home destroyed because of the isolationist ideology. I can also guarantee that the Americas do not welcome authoritarian US interference.
Thank you for sharing your insights. This hits home for me, as I am witnessing first hand how the UK is now suffering, after believing the lies of the far right. The far right's mission seems to be to distroy all the liberal, pro democracy alliances that have been built over all these years. When the far right lied to the British people about how negative the EU was, they were scared into voting for Brexit. Now, they are having serious "buyer's remorse". I am watching people I know in England struggling financially due to what they have lost because of Brexit. The longer they are out of the EU the worse it seems to get.
I talk to many about voting and getting registered to vote, but I also stress that people really pay attention to those running for office who "promise the moon". It isn't only important to vote, it's crucial to look deeply at the candidates behavior, past and present, and not to ignore warning signs of behavior that it dangerous and detrimental. I hope Americans have learned this lesson and realize that shiny objects and phony slogans don't deliver sound governance, and can do more damage than just raise taxes or the price of goods. I hope they are paying attention to those running for office who will be tasked with developing that new strategy needed in this dangerous world.
Sure, “there is nothing inconsistent or hypocritical in acting according to such a realistic assessment …” if you consider that all along Trump has been a 100% transactional actor whose admiration of fellow dictators (esp Putin) and hatred of following rules-based orders in any manner, shape or form was his guiding principle!
As seen from his past sexual conquests down to recent expressed desires to annex Canada & buy Greenland … Trump prefers to TAKE what he wants vs respect others’ boundaries and bargain ‘in good faith’ for what he wants.
He wants to divvy up the world into 3-4 basic spheres of influence, and America’s piece of the pie would primarily be The Americas - plus somehow magically retaining influence in all the world with providing minimal, if any, inputs.
His guiding principle in all this is “If you’re a rich white alpha male president they let you DO it!!” 💥

In that vein, the predominantly latino community in Miami voted for a Democrat *woman yesterday — the first Dem in 30 years & Trump’s home turf!
Another example where it took a lot of terrible anti-latino ICE activity to disabuse them of their pro-republican/Trump vs ‘communist Dems’ stance. 🙄
