Thankful for You
On this uniquely American holiday, I am grateful for this community we had created!
Dear Readers,
Happy Thanksgiving, to you and yours! I hope this message finds you and your families well. As you can tell from my recent broadcast, we’re visiting Rachel’s family in the Oklahoma. Florida, Ukraine, and all the chaos of the world feels far away here but I can’t help but feel shock following yesterday’s attack in Washington, D.C. I ask you to keep the families of the national guardsmen we lost in DC yesterday in your hearts as well as all our service members across the globe. We live in tense times which can often feel magnified when separated from loved ones and traditions.
I always appreciated that the holiday season opened with reflection on the importance of the people in our lives and gratitude towards the things we have. There’s no shortage of challenges in this world and there will always be something around the corner, but we’ll take each day as it comes. If you’re a subscriber to this substack, I’m sure you understand how tumultuous this past year has been and just how many challenges are facing this country. This year I am especially thankful for the support and guidance of my family and those nearest to me. “People power” doesn’t just mean marches, votes, and organizing; it also refers to the strength and solidarity we find in each other when facing uncertainty. A few nights ago our daughter asked Rachel’s 99-year old grandmother about the Dust Bowl. She said something I’ve heard her say many times: we all survived The Great Depression and Dust Bowl by helping each other. Neighbors would show up in desperate need of food and her family, struggling sharecroppers, helped them as they could.
I am thankful and deeply grateful for your readership and support over the past two years. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading Why it Matters as much as I enjoy writing it. Please continue to share your comments, questions, feedback, and thoughts.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman
