NYC Decides: Mamdani Wins Mayor
Nearly Two Million Votes Cast in Historic NYC Election
Dear readers,
Like many of you, I’ve spent the past few weeks closely watching the New York City mayoral race. Maybe it’s my bias as a former Brooklynite but I think it’s fair to think of the mayor of New York as one of the few municipal officials who exists as a de-facto national figure. In a time of executive overreach and the looming shadow of American authoritarianism, it’s crucial that the mayor of our largest city is capable of pushing back against Donald Trump’s agenda.
As of 9:30pm this evening, the people of New York City have elected Zohran Mamdani as their next mayor.
From the outset of his campaign Zohran positioned himself as an alternative to the Democratic establishment. His politics have been described as “Socialist” and much like representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, he has received the endorsement and support of the Democratic Socialists of America. His platform includes freezing the rent for thousands of rent stabilized units across the city and eliminating bus fares. He’s also a vocal opponent of Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas and has refused to condemn the term “globalize the intifada”. Jewish New Yorkers have expressed fear that Mamdani’s hesitancy to condemn Hamas will potentially contribute to the normalization of antisemitism.
I believe there’s a lesson to be learned from tonight. Even with the initial support of the party establishment, Cuomo’s campaign was ultimately doomed by his inability to grapple with the circumstances behind his resignation in 2021. During the June primary Cuomo was seen as the deeply flawed embodiment of “politics as usual”. Later during the general election, Cuomo’s attempts to build a wide, moderate coalition ultimately failed to gain traction with Democrat voters. In comparison, Mamdani’s message was consistently grounded in a forward-facing progressive agenda focused on affordability and economic factors. The Mamdani campaign also managed to use the enthusiasm of young progressive organizers as a vehicle for mobilizing voters across all five boroughs, overcoming a major disparity in spending compared to the Cuomo campaign.
The message from tonight is that it’s not enough for Democrats to simply oppose Trump - we need a message and a platform that resonates with the average person, we need to present compelling visions of a better future, and we need candidates that can mobilize popular support and aren’t weighed down by personal flaws and political baggage.
I hope Zohran succeeds in reducing the cost of living, standing up to Trump, and soothing the anxieties of New Yorkers that were alarmed by his rhetoric during the campaign. New York City deserves a mayor that can defend its residents and deliver prosperity for the average person. Time will tell as to whether Zohran has the ability to balance his vision for a progressive administration with the realities of city politics.

Hooray for Mamdani. This is what we need in America today. Some unbiased, non-bigoted, non-conformist. And certainly NOT a corporate Democrat. Let the Republicans own corporate America. The rest of us can do very nicely without billionaires, thank you very much. Give us sharers not takers.
Thanks for this review. I too look for forward looking …. Glad for the enthusiasm. I too hope he can manage the pressure of NY city mayor. Listening to his speech right now. I appreciate your thinking about…
