The Folly of Realism is a critical examination of the United States’ approach to Russia since the waning years of the Soviet Union. I argue that our usage of a short-sighted, transactional, “realist” foreign policy towards Moscow has set the stage for Russia’s military resurgence and compromised American interests in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Furthermore, I argue that there were numerous decisions made by American policymakers during the 1990s that compromised Ukrainian sovereignty and set the stage for Russia’s invasion. In place of transactional realism, I suggest that policymakers adopt the framework of “Neo-Idealism” as a guiding concept for American foreign policy.
