It is beyond heartbreaking that the United States, the most powerful nation on earth, cannot get its act together and help this fledgling democracy.

Greatly appreciate that you supply the Why’s as well as the How’s. Your writing and interviews are the most informative around, in my opinion.

II have been a paid subscriber (w/ Sunday delivery only, MN) for 30 years more or less. I stopped actually get a paper since the waste of paper seemed entirely unnecessary, so now only a digital subscriber.

The issue here includes how often the NYT is referenced in other reporting and particularly on television. So if this papers' reporting is so often sourced obviously there is a compounding effect and especially so if it is opinion writing vs straight reporting as the distinction diminishes as it is repeated.

I have noticed a straight up authoritarian opinion writing lately and I in my naivete was astounded to find this happening. Sorry, but WTF?. what is next, The "It Can't Happen Here" writing from 70 years ago will be forgotten and made fun of as if it ISN'T a very distinct possible reality?

When I was in college in the 80s I had a discussion with a professor of Physics. He was from Poland ( not in class) and I mentioned that Americans do not have a real, shared experience of being invaded like the European countries do/did and thiscauses a real blind spot in seeing the world. This is not the same as what my grandparents experienced in what was Yugoslavia but there was the benefit of that generation to influence the political and historic facts during their lives in this country of their choosing.

I still believe this is a "reality" problem for America and more so now after our more recent history of Middle Eastern wars. To not KNOW what it is to be invaded and occupied and to not have that be a thread that influenced how you understood the world can and probably has produced the hubris of infallibility of the last 2 decades. Putting aside the contribution of "winning" WWII", the lack of humility at a minimum but for sure we wouldn't be so cavalier on military power.

The stability of Europe and democracy worldwide does hinge on overcoming Putin's efforts in Ukraine. And reading these absurd opinion pieces tells me the authoritarian donor class has clearly influenced the NYT and that is truly frightening. Yes, I probably sound histrionic to some but I see real concerns here and share a paper of record could slide off track like this is a major concern to me and apparently many others. Sure, I like so many other topics and features of the NYT; cooking, travel and often political reporting but what is to be done? If I cancel my subscription with a letter of my reason why even register? Or if I DO cancel does that increase the ability of authoritarian donor class seeing their favored opinions even more?
