“Here, right matters.”

That’s what I said to Congress at an impeachment hearing against the President of the United States.

I never intended to be in the national spotlight. I joined the Army and served for 21 years because I wanted to fight and defend the country I love. I could have never expected that it would lead me to testify against the President of the United States.

That is, until I heard the president try to extort a foreign country into investigating a political rival — a quid pro quo.

I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. It was my duty to report the corruption.

I knew that I was assuming a lot of risk by challenging the most powerful person in the world. There was no doubt that he was going to use everything in his power to retaliate, just as he’d done to his opponents in the past.

But I had confidence that I could tell the truth. I knew that this is America — and here, right matters.
