Today Russia operated another incursion into NATO airspace over Romania. These drones were not actually flying an attack on Ukraine nor intended to intimidate Poland, or Romania. Why would you fly drones over the most heavily defended airspace instead of using alternative less defended routes? And why bother flying drones over a NATO country you have repeatedly intimidated knowing those drones would be shot down. WHY? Because the whole purpose of flying those drones over Poland (and now Romania) is for the express purpose of getting them shot down so Russians can obtain the electronic air defense signatures of the NATO air defense system.
The actual PHYSICAL retaliation by NATO is not of consequence. What is important to Russia is obtaining the NATO identifying and targeting electronic signatures and weapons control communication systems that co-ordinate NATO air defense systems. This is extremely important as Iran has been probing American electronic warfare systems in its repeated attacks on US ships and bases off of Yemen. In April, Houthi rebels launched a five prong attack on a US carrier using drones, rockets, and even supersonic missiles.
That attack was foiled not as much by physical retaliation like shooting the targets down, but rather by electronic warfare that disabled the attack devices. In the old days US jets spewed out aluminum flack and heat grenades to confuse targeting elements on attacking missiles. Today electronic targeting and control are extremely more sophisticated and can overcome those traditional physical distractions. The moment the Houthis launched, heat signatures were immediately sensed and reported by US satellite surveillance that covers the planet. Combat alarms immediately sounded on the USS TRUMAN, but with incoming less than ten minutes out you don't have time to scramble jets to shoot down incoming. Jets are already in the air including several electronic surveillance piloted planes and large radar drones far off the carrier perimeter.
The main action on the carrier took place below deck in darkened electronic warfare command rooms. Every target was almost immediately identified as to type, speed, and direction. Even though some drones and missiles were dummies meant to confuse US targeting by flying erratic courses. Without going into detail most of the threats were nullified by electronic interference. The few missiles/drones that got thru a very distant outer perimeter were met with physical destruction via a variety of defenses. Anything getting within a mile of the carrier are literally shredded by a wall of millions of metal shrapnel fired from super modern Gatling guns shooting thousands of rounds a second. Something out of science fiction. Much of war today is fought from dark rooms full of monitors with AI assisted response commands operating faster than human thought. The electronic signature of those dark rooms were the actual targets of the drones over Poland.
