Dear Readers,
In just 30 days—on February 25, 2025—my forthcoming book, The Folly of Realism, will be released nationwide. To mark this milestone, I’m excited to offer signed copies to those who preorder today.
This book provides a critical examination of U.S. foreign policy decision-making over three decades and across six presidential administrations, tracing how these decisions ultimately contributed to the Russia-Ukraine War. The Folly of Realism is more than a case study of past mistakes—it presents a bold vision for principled American leadership that prioritizes values alongside interests. By rejecting short-term, transactional approaches, this framework champions democracy, institutions, and alliances as essential tools for advancing U.S. foreign policy and avoiding disastrous conflicts.
Drawing on my experiences at U.S. Embassies in Kyiv and Moscow, at the Pentagon, and on the National Security Council, as well as interviews with presidents and top policymakers, this book delivers both firsthand insight and practical solutions for the future.
Serhii Plokhy, a leading Ukrainian historian, says:
"Alex Vindman combines decades of experience in the U.S. military and government with academic insight to explain how successive American administrations misjudged Russia and emboldened the Kremlin to start the largest conventional war in Europe since 1945. A must-read for anyone who wants to understand what went wrong and how it can be fixed." (Serhii Plokhy, Harvard University)
Michael McFaul, former U.S. Ambassador to Russia, writes:
"The Folly of Realism offers a powerful critique of the decades of policies, followed by Democrats and Republicans alike, that failed to defend the sovereignty of and democracy in Ukraine. Drawing on his decades of unique experiences working on relations between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia, Vindman writes with clarity and persuasion—first in diagnosing past problems, and then in suggesting future prescriptions for U.S. foreign policymakers."

And it might be a good idea to make sure that people ordering a signed copy should be sure to use whatever email address that they use for their Substack Account, otherwise using any other email that is not used for Substack might result in their not being recognized as a paid subscriber and not receiving their signed copy.
