On the morning of December 17th, Russian General Igor Kirillov was assassinated in Moscow. The Ukrainian SBU has claimed responsibility for the operation, which reportedly utilized an explosive hidden inside a scooter parked on the street. As the head of the Russian military’s Chemical, Biological, and Nuclear Defense forces, Kirilov was formally indicted by the Ukrainian government for authorizing the use of chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops. Moscow has promised “revenge” in response to the attack - a threat which comes six days after vowing revenge following a Ukrainian ATACMS strike on a military airfield.

After recently speaking on NPR regarding the operation, I figured I would expand upon my initial observations and provide a deeper reflection on what this means for the war in Ukraine.
