I am considering canceling my subscription to the NY Times for the same reason. It has become a major disappointment, with its failure to report on the numerous threats to our democracy.
The real stolen election was in 2016, with daily front page coverage of "but her emails!", while tfg's ongoing, well-known fraudulent business practices were buried or ignored, and his constant lies were never called out as lies for a very long time.
Now there's incessant mentioning of President Biden's age, with no discussion of tfg's barely different age. And there's no discussion of President Biden's accomplishments and skilled handling of the many foreign issues and relationships, which the tfg is too stupid, too incompetent and too ignorant to even begin to address.
I'm supporting smaller, and (I hope) more accurate publications. I just hope enough people are paying attention to actuall facts so that our country survives this threat from the fascists, formerly known as the Republican Party.
Thank you. Finally saying it. Good Journalism is out there it is just that the big fish with the click bait are now selling their souls for the almighty dollar instead of reporting the facts. Just the facts. I don't want their opinions. I want the fact. If the sun is up, say so, even if trump says it's not. Get the picture media? Stop trying to "well let's look at both sides of this " there's no such thing as alternative facts. That's called a lie.
Thank you! I have just about stopped reading the NYT after a full life with it and have considered cancelling. Haberman was the beginning for me and they haven’t stopped tumbling yet. Cancelled!!
This is exactly the reason why I cancelled my subscription to the New York Times a while ago. One article about how Ukraine should concede to Russia - it was quite early into the war I think in May 2022 - was the critical point for me. I would rather give the money to a paid subscription on Substack to support writers I choose, who stand for something and are driven by a bigger commitment, not by advertising and algorithms.
I had canceled my NYT subscription years ago. Friends convinced me to try it again. I'm going to cancel. I agree: it's devolving into theater of the absurd.
I subscribe to the puzzles and cooking, only. Your argument is compelling though, support is support. Would you consider publishing a crossword with your posts? I am kind of addicted.
Dear Mr. Vindman, unfortunately, I agree with your observation...I have eagerly read the NYT about every day of my life from 18 years old on...now 80, I have also been disappointed by The Old Grey Lady but because of my years of learning and trusting her, I have been ignoring these trends and found myself "reading between the lines." This is the reason I subscribe to "Why It Matters"-- to read serious analysis about serious activities in this dangerous world. Anne Bartley
I was a stock broker when The Wall Street Journal was bought by Murdock. I canceled my subscription immediately - and I did it for the very reason you’re considering!
I found solid financial reporting other places.
I’ve never been a twitter person, haven’t watched Fox for over a decade. I Have Standards especially when they Don’t.
Slava Ukaini - my grandfather & grandmother were from Odesa. Hope one day, I can visit as a tourist when Putin is defeated.
Since 2016 I’ve watched MSM descend the escalator with tRump. The NYT, particularly, should have been resistant to the siren song of tRumpism. There was no news organization better acquainted with his posturing, lying, exaggerating habits. After the NYT published so much of his drivel, other papers joined the chorus. If the Paper of Record” could appear to accept his lying rants, why couldn’t they?
So, here we are, in 2024, after 9 years of seeming acceptance by the journalists who are supposed to report the realities of life in America, facing the most consequential Presidential election since 1860.
I was watching a documentary on Netflix regarding the corruption in Malaysia (1-MBD) in about 2010, right after the Banking crisis and recession of 2008-09. And it made me think also of systemic banking corruption that happened in Iceland and Greece and the world wide effects of 2008-09. One common player is Goldman Sachs and banking process learned & earned so to speak on a corporate level with Enron and others. Nonstop greed of the last 20 years meets globalization!
The propaganda of Putin to corrupt democracy whether here or Ukraine is an agenda that is life and death for him. Malaysia was successful in regime change as was Ukraine but Putin fears this could happen in Moscow, I believe, therefore he will continue to fight democracy anywhere. Unfortunately, we have so many willing and able donor class billionaires willing to be sellouts so they can stay on top just like Putin. Scary, morally shameful and amazing all at once.

Just love your frank assessment of the media and the New York Times. Your point is spot on. More voices need to echo your thoughts.

NYT used to be called the “newspaper of record.” No longer and I have told them so.

The NYT went from “All the News That’s Fit to Print” to “All the News That’s Fit to S...t?”:

The Grey lady continues to lose her way.....
